May Service Challenge: Spring Cleaning Donation Drive

The beginning of a new month always excites me - new goals, new possibilities, and new ways to serve the Lord and His people.

Take a look to see what's in store for this month's service challenge...

It's getting warm outside so you know what that means, right? Its time to open up the windows and let the sounds of spring ring through the house: the birds chirping, the kids playing outside and the hum of lawn mowers everywhere. I absolutely love it!

It also means its time to store your winter wardrobe, donate your gently used belongings and make room for new things in your life. This may sound easy enough for some but others battle serious anxiety over the thought of parting ways with some of their things.

That's where this month's challenge comes in.

Spring cleaning is a tradition that takes place in many households on a yearly basis, including my own. This year, however, the challenge is to consider donating your gently used belongings to one of the local, non profit organizations in your area.

The good news is that there are many organization who are holding donation drives around this time and I have made a list of possible things to donate along with a list of potential organizations you can donate them to.

So, set aside a few hours this month to clean, sort and organize our household back into shape!

A great rule of thumb to use when sorting through your things is the one-year rule: whatever you haven't worn or used in the past year should be set aside to be donated.

Do you have an old television set you've been storing in your basement or attic? How about an old phone or computer you're no longer using?

Below, I've compiled a list of items to consider when sorting through your belongings.

Now its time to decide who and where you would like to give your donation to.

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Local Church - Many church establishments have a designated child care area and can benefit from toys, play pens, cribs, walkers and the likes. They often times hold clothes drives for those who are in need as well.

2. Boys & Girls Club of America - Your donation to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America will help fund the United States’ largest and most-effective youth-mentoring organization. Their network of 370 agencies supports over 250,000 children annually.

3. Lupus Foundation of America - The Lupus Foundation of America has a program named Household Goods Program wherein it allows residents to join the fight against lupus by donating usable household items that are then sold to for-profit wholesale buyers. The proceeds from the sales of the donated items are used to support individuals with lupus and their families.

4. The Salvation Army - The Salvation Army has a National Rehabilitation Program which provides spiritual, social and emotional assistance for men and women who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. Each center offers residential housing, work, and group/individual therapy in a clean, wholesome environment. Your donated goods help fund this program.

With the exception of the first choice, you can schedule a front door pick up service with the other three organizations. You can just leave your donation at your front door and they will gladly pick it up and give you a receipt for it. It's that easy!

Your support will help many people and bring blessings upon many lives.  Remember: "one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Now let's get cleaning!
